Mobile website performance is how well your site loads, displays, and functions when visitors access it from a smartphone or tablet. Tracking it with key performance indicators (KPIs) tells you exactly where the experience breaks down and what to fix.

Why mobile website performance KPIs matter

More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site underperforms on a phone, you're losing visitors, conversions, and search rankings.

What mobile optimization actually means

Responsiveness

Responsiveness means your site changes shape to fit the device displaying it. When a visitor loads your page on a phone, the layout should reflow to fit that screen, not shrink down like a miniature desktop view.

Site speed

Forty per cent of visitors leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load. Google recommends your site load in under a second on mobile. That bar is high because mobile devices process data more slowly than desktop computers, and mobile networks add their own latency.

Factors that slow mobile sites down include large image files, render-blocking scripts, and servers that aren't optimized for fast delivery. Addressing these directly improves every other performance metric.

Touch-friendly design

A responsive layout is necessary but not sufficient. Mobile websites need to be designed for fingers, not cursors. Buttons that are easy to click with a mouse can be nearly impossible to tap accurately on a touchscreen. Navigation, forms, and calls to action all need to account for touch interaction.

Layout optimized for mobile screens

Before tracking individual KPIs, it helps to frame your measurement approach around three questions.

Mobile vs. desktop vs. tablet

Start by comparing performance across device types. If mobile and desktop traffic are roughly equal but desktop converts at a much higher rate, that gap is a signal. Something in the mobile experience is blocking conversions, whether it's a hidden checkout button, a slow page, or a form that's hard to complete on a small screen.

Device-level performance

Mobile traffic isn't uniform. Your site may load well on one type of device and poorly on another. Looking at how metrics break down across different mobile devices, such as iPhones versus Android devices, tells you whether a problem is universal or device-specific.

Cross-device behaviour

Most visitors don't use a single device. A visitor might first encounter your brand through an Instagram ad on their phone, browse without converting, then return on a laptop to complete a purchase. Tracking cross-device activity gives you a more accurate picture of how mobile fits into the full path to conversion.

Mobile-friendly status

Google's Mobile-Friendly Test confirms whether Google can crawl and render your mobile site correctly. Failing this test affects your visibility in search results. Treat it as a baseline check before anything else.

Mobile device conversions

Compare conversion rates across device types. A low mobile conversion rate relative to desktop is a clear signal that the purchase or sign-up flow has friction on mobile. This KPI tells you where to focus optimization effort.

Time on site by device

Average session duration broken down by device type shows whether visitors are engaging with your content or leaving quickly. If time on site is significantly lower on a specific device, investigate that device's experience directly.

Google search CTR: desktop vs. mobile

Google Search Console lets you compare click-through rate (CTR) on the same keywords across desktop and mobile. If a keyword performs well on desktop but poorly on mobile, visitors are seeing your page in results and choosing not to click. That points to a title tag, meta description, or SERP appearance issue specific to mobile.

Pages per session on mobile

Pages per session measures how much of your site visitors explore after landing. A low number on mobile suggests visitors aren't finding reasons to go deeper, whether because navigation is difficult, content doesn't load properly, or the experience simply isn't compelling on a small screen.

Analytics tools

Google Analytics breaks down traffic, behaviour, and conversions by device type. The mobile overview report shows the split between mobile, tablet, and desktop visitors. The site speed report highlights pages with slow load times across device types. Adding a mobile segment and comparing it against your full audience is one of the fastest ways to find where mobile experience is costing you.
